Newgate School is a nonprofit, technical school in Minneapolis, MN, offering free mechanic school training to underserved young adults. Through hands-on programs and community support, we prepare students for stable, well-paying careers in the automotive industry, without the burden of tuition.
At Newgate School in Minneapolis, a car donation isn’t just a transaction; it’s a chance to give someone a path to lifelong stability. When you donate your car, it becomes a hands-on learning tool for students enrolled in our Auto Mechanic Program and Auto Body Program. Some vehicles are refurbished and sold to fund the school, while others are given away through our Wheels for Women initiative, which provides free vehicles to working single mothers in the Twin Cities.
We accept cars in nearly any condition, including those that no longer run. Towing is available, and 100% of the proceeds from every donation go back into supporting free education and resources for our students. Newgate School offers tuition-free automotive training for underserved young adults who are motivated to build a better life. With no costs, no loans, and no classroom lectures, our students gain hands-on experience from day one. Every lesson happens in the shop, working on real cars under the guidance of skilled instructors with years of professional experience. Training is individualized and flexible, so students can move at a pace that works for them. Most graduate within 12–18 months, earning the skills and confidence to launch a career in the local automotive industry. From diagnostics and repairs to paintwork and detailing, they leave job-ready.
Students in the Auto Mechanic Program learn to diagnose and repair engines, brake systems, suspensions, and more. By the time they graduate, they’re prepared to work as general service technicians in shops, dealerships, and service centers across the metro area. The Auto Body Program focuses on repair, refinishing, and restoration. Students get experience with collision damage, paint prep, and cosmetic repair work, developing a skill set that translates to careers in body shops, custom garages, and detailing centers.
Our Wheels for Women program supports single, working mothers who need reliable transportation to keep their jobs and care for their families. Through this initiative, qualified moms in the Twin Cities receive reconditioned vehicles at no cost. These cars are repaired and inspected by our students as part of their training, creating a powerful full-circle moment of community giving.
