Tenisha and her daughter at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul.

Meet "Wheels for Women" Recipient, Tenisha

When you first meet Tenisha, you are immediately impressed by this young woman’s lively energy. She’s working hard to support herself and her young daughter. And her “Wheels” car is helping her get on her way.

Tenisha attends The College of St Catherine as a full-time nursing student, and on weekends she gets practical experience as a Home Health Aid with disabled older adults. In between school and work, Tenisha spends every moment with her sparkling 3-year-old, Darrionna, whose parenting duties she shares with her mom.

Last winter, Tenisha received a quality donated car free from Newgate’s “Wheels” program. “This car is very important to me,” Tenisha said. “Because I travel for work, I had to have a car. The job gives me valuable experience in the nursing field, and, of course, money to help with expenses. My car makes it all possible. I’m grateful to Newgate and the donor.”

Every year more than 50 reliable later-model donated cars are awarded to talented young single moms like Tenisha. In the lifetime of Newgate’s Wheels for Women program, over 700 women have been helped by folks like you. Thank you donors!

Transportation is often the difference between welfare or employment for a single mother.

Wheels for Women

Transportation can be a major problem for the working poor, especially single mothers struggling for self-sufficiency. These moms are motivated to work, but are greatly burdened by a lack of transportation to get their kids to childcare and themselves to work on tight schedules.

Every month, Newgate gives 4-5 better quality, refurbished cars to working single moms referred from women's shelters and other women's service agencies. The Wheels cars are making powerful differences in these women's lives.

Janet says, “Thanks, Newgate donors!”

“Right now, I’m attending college full-time, working 2 part-time jobs, and enjoying all the fun of life with my 7-year-old son, Gavin. I’m going to succeed!”

In 3 years, Janet will graduate with a BS and Masters in Social Work with a focus on helping women who have suffered from violent relationships. Currently she works for the Committee Against Domestic Abuse (CADA) where she supervises visitations and works in the shelter.

On weekends, Janet can be found waitressing at a popular eatery, where she is the favorite of town regulars.

Every day, Janet uses her “Wheels” car to turn her life around. “The “Wheels” program is an amazing stepping stone to a successful life,” she said. “Thanks to you, Gavin and I are going to make it!”
